School of Medical Laboratory Science

Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Science is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)* and offers a 50-week curriculum that can lead to a bachelor's degree for students attending an affiliated university or a certificate of completion for non-affiliated students.

Clinical Laboratory Rotations

Clinical Laboratory rotations include studies in microbiology, chemistry, hematology/coagulation, urinalysis, immunology (serology), immunohematology (blood banking) and phlebotomy.

All rotations include specimen collection and processing, department instrumentation, quality control and clinical correlations.

Academic Credit

Students will receive a certificate of completion upon finishing the program. Academic credit is granted by affiliated universities and colleges as published in their catalogs.

The program also fulfills requirements for national certification exams in medical technology given by certification agencies and state licensing exams. Exams are taken by the student after successful completion of the program. Awarding of a baccalaureate degree or certificate of completion is not contingent upon passing the state licensing or national certification exams.

Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital Tuition: $1,000 - 2,500

Additional fees are charged for textbooks and Florida licensure.

Orlando Health Bayfront School of Hospital Medical Laboratory Science is affiliated with the University of South Florida. Affiliations and adjunct faculty may vary from year to year.

Program Outcomes

Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital’s School for Medical Lab Science has a 100% employment placement rate for graduates seeking lab positions; 100% first time pass rate on board certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathology or American Medical Technologists for the past three years.

Categorical training for clinical immunohematology, chemistry, microbiology and hematology had 100% pass rates with immediate job placement. The program's final exam and focused review sessions prepare our students to perform well on the BOC, generally scoring at or above national means for the specialty areas.

The School maintains a rigorous program for assessment of program outcomes to ensure CQI (continuous quality improvement).

The measures used include:

1. External certification exam results - Aggregate certification examination scores achieved by our graduates generally meet or exceed the national (passing) means for the specialty areas of the MLS Generalist examination of the American Society of American Pathologists (ASCP).
2. Graduation rate – reflects the number of students who start the year that go on to graduate
3. Attrition rate - reflects the number of students that start but do not complete the year
4. Placement rate into employment or further education after graduation
5. Evaluation feedback from students and instructors actively collected during the year
6. Feedback from employers and graduates giving retrospective evaluation of the program
7. Performance on internal cumulative final(s) to assess preparation for certification examination

The results of these measures will be used as follows:

1. Analyzed upon collection and reviewed by the Director, faculty and Advisory Committee
2. Provide the basis for program planning and improvement
3. Reflected in ongoing curriculum development, resource allocation and program modification
4. Subject to ongoing re-analysis and monitoring for effectiveness of changes and further modification if indicated

Measures are included in information for prospective students (website and application packet), current students (handbook) and are submitted to NAACLS as required. The intent is for CQI to be a dynamic and ongoing quest for excellence.
