University of South Florida Athletics

The University of South Florida (USF) Athletic Program (NCAA Division I - Big East Conference) is the fellowship’s primary team physician responsibility. Fellows have the opportunity to work alongside a team of experienced sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, athletic trainers and graduate assistants, and to shadow experienced sports medicine physicians in Division I football as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The USF football team plays its home games at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and on-site radiography and technicians are available on game days.

Fellows serve as team physician for all sports and independently for nine major sports: men and women’s soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, track & field, golf and sailing. Opportunities also exist to cover various Big East tournaments that USF hosts. Fellows also staff a training room clinic once a week at the Athletic Training Center, which features the latest in rehabilitation equipment and therapeutic modalities, including a C-arm fluoroscope, an in-house pharmacy stocked with commonly used medications, CLIA-waived laboratory tests, intravenous fluids and suture supplies. The training center also has three HydroWorx® pools and includes an underwater treadmill, three jet currents, video camera and computer control console. Florida Race Place Triathlon Series

Sports Medicine fellows staff the medical tent for three sprint triathlons (0.25-mile swim, 10-mile bike and 5K run) that take place in the area. Fellows learn how to organize a medical team for mass events and coordinate medical care with community medical resources.

Ovarian Cancer Race

In the fall, fellows serve as medical directors and provide primary medical coverage for the Annual Ovarian Cancer Race. This event allows fellows to gain experience in managing heat-related illnesses as well as acute musculoskeletal overuse and dermatologic conditions of the lower extremities.

Professional Boxing/Mixed Martial Arts

Sports Medicine fellows have the chance to sit ringside and provide medical coverage for boxing and mixed martial arts athletes under the supervision of director and ringside physician, Dr. Carlos Rodriguez.

The Tampa Bay area’s beaches and agreeable year-round weather bring many talented athletes here from around the country to participate in various sporting events. Community physicians and athletic trainers have invited past fellows to join in providing medical coverage for events including Olympic-caliber triathlons, BMX racing, X-Games and the AVP tour.
