Board certified in sports medicine and family medicine, Carlos R. Rodriguez, MD is Bayfront Health St. Petersburg’s Sports Medicine Fellowship director and the assistant director to the Family Medicine Residency Program. Since 2011, he has been responsible for developing, overseeing and enhancing both programs.
Earlier in his career, he served in the U.S. Navy as a General Medical Officer. Since then, he has been in private practice and served as a team physician for many local sports teams, including the Tampa Bay Rays, Eckerd College, the University of South Florida and the Tampa Bay Storm. Dr. Rodriguez also is a licensed professional ringside physician and provides medical coverage for professional boxing and mixed martial arts in Florida. Currently, he is a member of the Bayfront Health Medical Group Sports Medicine practice.
He received his B.A. in biology from Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts). His medical training was completed at the Rosalind Franklin University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School (Illinois). He completed a general surgery internship at Eastern Virginia Medical School (Norfolk) and a family medicine residency at The Medical Center of Central Georgia/Mercer University School of Medicine (Macon), where he served as chief resident during his final year. He performed a fellowship in sports medicine at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.
Dr. Rodriguez is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and holds a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a member of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Association of Ringside Physicians.
