Dr. Benjamin Tharian, a board-certified physician in gastroenterology and hepatology, leads the Center for Advanced Endoscopy, Research and Education at Bayfront Health St Petersburg Digestive Health Institute. He is a recognized expert in providing care for complex digestive disorders, with advanced endoscopic procedures that include:
- Therapeutic endoscopy, including Barrett's eradication and luminal stenting
- Balloon enteroscopy
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- Endo bariatrics
- Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
- Third-space endoscopy, including POEM and ESD
- Interventional endoscopy for children
Dr. Tharian’s Training
Dr. Tharian received his medical training at Medical College Trivandrum and Kottayam, both in India. He completed a residency with the National Health Service and a five-year fellowship in gastroenterology, hepatology and general medicine in the United Kingdom. Before relocating to the United States, Dr. Tharian practiced medicine in the UK and Australia. Most recently, he served as an associate professor of gastroenterology and hepatology, and director of general and advanced endoscopy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Arkansas Children's Hospital.
About Dr. Tharian
Dr. Tharian is board certified for internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology in the US, UK and Australia. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE). He holds permanent medical licenses with the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom and the Australian Medical Council. Dr. Tharian is involved in several committees of the ACP and ASGE and speaks at international meetings.
Dr. Tharian has a keen interest in endoscopic training and quality improvement projects. He has been published in the field of interventional endoscopy, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He serves on editorial boards and reviews articles for multiple peer-reviewed journals.
He received the Dean's Award as the Best Consulting Physician at UAMS in 2021. Dr. Tharian is passionate about teaching and established the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at UAMS, where he served as executive director.
